In a few hours, a new year will be upon us. A new start. A new checkpoint. A new opportunity to understand the importance of who we are in a fallen world. This new year is a clean slate where the challenges and obstacles that we encountered in the year of 2015 will be no more. Though the obstacles may influence our mindset entering into a new year, it is a new opportunity to grow emotionally, strengthen ourselves mentally, and overcome what we already have.
It's a new opportunity to prove to ourselves once again, "I can do this."
I'm sure you would agree that it is challenging to remain hopeful and confident in ourselves as we see the brokenness of the world in which we live. I feel like every time I turn on the television or scroll through my news feed, it's continuous coverage of the racial tension, the terrorism, heated political competition, or the blindness of goodness in our world. It's easy for us to look at our fallen world, and allow it to trickle into our own lives, making us feel uneasy about who we are and became doubtful of how anyone "like me" could make a dent in the world. It can influence us in such a way that we feel fallen ourselves.
Yet, it's okay to be broken. It makes us human.
It's critical that we recognize the brokenness of our fallen world, or the brokenness that we experience through our individual struggles, but it's more crucial that we do all we can to not dwell within it. When we dwell within our pain, our head, and our internal battles (depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc.), we open a gap where the lies of this world enable us to find factual components in the painful lies that we often become lead to believe.
2016 is a fresh 365 day opportunity to understand the importance of who we are, and to discover something about ourselves that we believed to be non-existent. Though there may be fear, worry, anxiety, or a constant anxious heart and mind entering a new year...Keep in mind that you have overcome what you have until now. It's vital to enter these new times of growth with the proper mind set of confidence that you will overcome what is ahead and that you will not be shaken by the remarks of this world, or the negative and piercing thoughts in your head. The moment we begin finding truth in what our minds and other people lead us to believe, is when become distracted from who we were intended to be all along.
Once the clock strikes midnight, it's a new beginning. An entirely new part of your story. Be courageous with who you are and the life you live in this new year. We must begin building our identity on not what has happened before or who we were, but the person that we are continually being shaped to become each and every day from the minute we arise to the moment our head hits the pillow.
Don't ever lose sight of who you are.
Thank you for being you in 2015. Now go do something big in 2016.
