By now, most of us are back in school, returning to our old ways of waking up early and getting homework to do. In some cases, things may seem like they are "same old same old" as people say. So what will you do to make your year different from the rest, and to actually enjoy it? My advice? Look for opportunity. Opportunity is everywhere! It can be anything from meeting someone new club that you've wanted to be a part of but never actually took the chance to go. Clubs are the best, in my opinion. Not only could you join a club that you never thought you would be interested in, just to see how you will like it, but you also get to meet new people who have the same interests as you. For instance, if you love to draw or paint and you join an art club at your school, you are guaranteed to be around people who love art as much as you. That's always a good conversation starter, and that way, you already know that you have something in common with that person.
Now, if you just go for it and join a club just to see if you will like it, it can help you branch out, and step out of your comfort zone a bit. I know what you might be thinking. "But it's called a comfort zone for a reason. Why would I want to step out of it?" Well, speaking from experience, stepping out of that comfort zone can make it even bigger. Last year, my friend convinced me to join science club. Now, I'll say this right now, I'm not good in big groups, unless it's a big group of all my friends. I'm not even good in big groups of acquaintances. I just get so nervous about being around so many people that I can give myself a migraine from all my worrying. Literally. At my school, science club is one of the more popular clubs, so it's got quite a few people in it. Even though I enjoy science, mostly chemistry, the amount of people that would be there was a big turn off for me. But, nevertheless, my friend convinced me to go, saying that I should go just once, and I didn't have to come back if I didn't like it.
So, I went. And it was awesome! Turns out, a lot of my other friends were in that club, and I had no idea! And it was really fun! We made a haunted house were we led people around with blindfolds on to touch things like peeled grapes that felt like eyeballs. I even met some great new people through my friends, and everyone was so nice. I felt so included and involved that I I had absolutely no problem going back for another meeting. But, if I hadn't stepped out of that comfort zone of mine, I never would have known how great the club really was. That's why you should take that first step too. You don't have to take a leap. Just a step. Do something different, and try new experiences. Because when opportunity knocks, you never know that will happen until you let it in.
